Apostrophes: Letter or Digit Omission

The American Heritage Dictionary, The AP Stylebook, The Chicago Manual of Style, and the Merriam-Webster Guide to Punctuation & Style suggest that an apostrophe replace certain letters or digits that have been omitted.
